January 14 | Marilyn Monroe Marries Joe DiMaggio

I do…for a few months, anyway.

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were America’s dream couple… on paper, anyway. It was a whirlwind, and although it didn’t last, the relationship was a paparazzi dream come true: She was Hollywood’s legendary bombshell and he was baseball royalty. And on this day in 1954, they married in San Francisco’s City Hall.

Now, things quickly unravel because opposites might attract but they don’t always make for a peaceful marriage. Joe wanted a quiet, traditional wife. Marilyn was…uh..not that.

It ultimately fell apart during that quintessential Marilyn scene. You know the one. She’s on a subway grate with her white dress flying up around her. On-site during the filming, Joe cracked with jealousy and they divorced soon after, just nine months after they wed.

But here’s the twist: after the divorce, Joe never stopped caring for Marilyn. In the end, he arranged her funeral, and famously sent roses to her grave for years.

Oh and hey, if it’s your birthday today, you share the day with Jason Bateman. Happy birthday!
