In my heart and in my cart + other things

In My Heart -

Hello and happy new year! I hope 2026 is off to a lovely start. As for me, I’ve been at home with my family for several days in a row and dare I say I am ready to head back to the office on Monday?! Ying and yang, baby. One is only good because of the other.

Seriously though, after a busy weekend of traveling and bopping around over Christmas, we decided to skip plans for NYE and stay home. I worked on Monday and Tuesday, but since Wednesday, it’s been just my immediate family, largely cooped up inside. We meandered out for a drive around the lake, stopping to have a drink and a snack at one of the few hole-in-the-wall dive bars open on New Years Day, which made for a nice diversion. The next day, my husband had an appointment to renew his passport, and we used the opportunity to load everyone up and get lunch downtown, near the post office.

I read recently that what you do on New Years Day is what you’ll do all year long, and if going for a drive and stopping for mozzarella sticks and a glass of cheap wine is it, I’ll be delighted. I was intentional about not doing any laundry, just in case the superstition rings true. Ha!

Let’s say it is, how will you be spending your year?

Saturdays are so often for sleeping in a bit, but I’ve gotten too used to that over the back-to-back long holiday weekends and so this morning I forced myself out of bed at my usual time. I’ll say it’s nice to have a completely quiet house for a change! And I’ll be glad come Monday morning that I didn’t wait to break the habit until the morning of.

I’ve been deep in a reading rut lately, so to kick off the new year, I picked up this old favorite that I’ve read at least five times (maybe more?) and it’s absolutely doing the trick. Comfort reads are akin to comfort watches - sometimes you just need something familiar that you know feels good. I read half the book in the last day or so, and I’m looking forward to a long, lazy afternoon taking in the rest of it.

As an addendum, I’ve been really enjoying Not Just the Tudors podcast. The episodes are long. The host is British. I’m generally interested in anything related to the Tudors. It’s just been a win all the way around.

Addendum to the addendum, if you enjoy this genre, The Decameron on Netflix is a delight!

Finally, I’m also reading The Pivot Year, which comes in a page-a-day format that I really enjoy. Short form motivation and the perfect length to read while I wait for my kettle to heat up in the morning.

Last bit! Each month, I try to write a quick sentence in my journal, documenting the best and brightest parts for posterity. I noticed a common denominator in many of them last year: being with my sister. We live 2.5 hrs apart but I shall be making it a priority to get there more regularly. It makes for a good month!

In My Cart -

+We got my 9 y/o son a lava lamp for Christmas and it’s been a hit! I notice often that the classic toys never really die out. My kids have been obsessed in intervals with such basics as the Rubik’s cube, yo-yo and a magic 8 ball. And legos of course.

+I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that I often consult the magic 8 ball. Along with reading my horoscope often and occasionally asking yes/no questions of Tarotoo. I’m a woo-woo gal after all!

+We’re all obsessively organizing closets and cleaning our houses right now, aren’t we? It may be the millennial in me, but Capri Blue still hits and accordingly, these have my attention.

+PSA that Sephora has some very good year end sales still going through the end of the weekend.

+New year, same me. These are my favorite bras and I picked up a fresh set to replace some oldies.

+Excellent for deep winter, which is of course on her way imminently.

+Looking out for the January me who will need pep and cheer in the form of color and comfort:

Other Things -

+One of my favorite OG bloggers has joined the newsletter space. Immediately subscribed.

+I have two New Years resolutions: send birthday cards and listen to a new-to-me album every week. I have absolutely no context, but the internet speaks highly of Olivia Dean, so I’m planning to start there.

+Other resolutions.

+Also this resolution.

+Extremely important to share.

+Journal prompts to start the year.

+Okay, so you’re not 17 anymore.

+A few pictures of our Christmas and New Years:
